Weed Control

No chemicals are used at all.

WEED CHALLENGE:
The biggest challenge was during the initial set up of the garden beds.  It took several months to establish the beds before they could planted.  We still have to contend with grass overgrowth in areas where we have not completed the raised beds all the way.

BED LAYERS:
Ground level:
Biodegradable materials were used on top of the grass.  Materials included:

Wood chips
Cloth
Newspapers

MANURE LAYER:
A thick layer of manure was added.

MULCH LAYER:
A thick layer of wood chips was added.

CROPS MEDIA:
Wood chips are pushed aside and potting soil is added in the space.  Seeds or plants are added in the soil.  Once the seedlings are older, mulch is pushed around to prevent weeds from interfering.

WEEDING:
Very few weeds grow from the ground level.  Only surface weeds grow, which are hand pulled and they come up.  They are very easy to pull up.
